Bike/Walk Challenge 2012: And the Winners are...
Five elementary schools in Vienna participated in the Bike/Walk Challenge 2012.
Thousands of kids took to the streets of Vienna this week for 2012 Bike/Walk Challenge.
On Friday, a record number - 1,485 - elementary school students walked, biked or scootered to school.

Biking Cup:
- Vienna Elementary School, 1st place
- Marshall Road Elementary, 2nd place
- Wolftrap Elementary, 3rd place
- This award is given to the school with the highest percentage bike riders relative to the total number of participants.
Challenge Cup:
- Vienna Elementary School, 1st place
- Wolftrap Elementary, 2nd place
- Cunningham Park Elementary, 3rd place
- This is awarded to the school with the largest percentage increase in participants over last year's challenge.

It was a great week for all the kids and parents that participated. Parents at VES are already asking for more events like this. The school yard was bustling with activity and smiles were everywhere. Teachers reported that children arrived in class focused and ready to take their SOLs. School could be like this every day if we encourage more children to walk and bike on a regular basis.
Here's the performance figures for the top 3 schools in each Challenge category. Really impressive.
Challenge Cup (Percent increase in participation over last year):
Vienna - 42.5%
Wolftrap - 6.5%
Cunningham Park - 5.8%
Biking Cup (Percentage of participants that biked to school):
Vienna - 23.3%
Marshall Road - 15.5%
Wolftrap - 14.6%

Congrats to Vienna for the sweep. They took on WT ES' Bike Train and did a good job (the bike train only ran 2 days mind you). But WT still had the coolest guest riders with a 10x US National Champion, a local racing team and three Fairfax County Bike Patrol officers.
