Fire On Oak Street Displaces Four Residents

Fire Battalion Chief estimates damage at $100,000

An electrical fire at 206 Oak St S.W. on Sunday night will displace four residents from their home.

Firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire, caused by a gas leak in the basement of the home, around 9:30 p.m., Fairfax County Fire Batallion Chief Greg Bunch said. The fire caused about $100,000 worth of damage, he said.

As of 10:30 p.m., Bunch said the gas had been shut off and the house was secure. No other homes on the block would be affected, he said.

Units from Vienna, Dunn Loring, Merrifield, Tysons and Fairfax City blanketed the length of Oak Street and its intersection with Cottage Street, turning away traffic as firefighters walked the perimeter of the home and continued to work inside.

The four occupants, including an elderly residents, self-evacuated before firefighters arrived on scene, Bunch said. They were waiting in the safety of a neighbor's home, he said. No injuries were reported.

When units first responded, however, dispatchers reported a man down,  repeating "mayday" three times. Bunch said a female firefighter got disoriented by the smell of the gas and separated from the group as they entered into the basement; she evacuated unharmed.

It is not clear how long the residents will be displaced.

Erica, your reporting is awesome! I heard the sirens last night and wondered where they were headed; I opened my e-mail this morning and learned all about it from Vienna Patch. Thank goodness no one was hurt. Thanks for your fast reporting. You are become my "go to" source for information.
