Five Days Later: Hundreds Without Power for Holiday

Dominion says it will work through the Fourth of July to repair aftermath of derecho in Vienna

Update 10:16 a.m.: Dominion will be working in the following areas today

  • Beulah Rd
  • Cedar Ln
  • Chain Bridge Rd
  • Wood Oak Dr north of Westford Dr
  • High Dr & Idylwood Dr
  • Hunter Station Rd
  • Meadowlark Rd
  • Browns Mill Rd at Crowell Rd
  • Cedar Ln & Idylwood Rd
  • Vale Spring Dr & Vale Rd

Original 6 a.m.: Dominion Virginia Power estimates 19,372 customers in Fairfax County remain powerless after Friday's derecho, including some in Vienna neighborhoods, as of 1 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The fix for many residents came on Tuesday afternoon, when many of the more than 1,600 without power along Hunter Mill Road regained electricity.

But the interactive outage map shows hundreds are still in the dark, some near the areas attended to by the crews, as of 1 a.m.

Each morning, Dominion has released a list of streets where crews will be working to restore power. On Monday and Tuesday, the list included Windover Avenue and Lewis Street, but residents in the area reported they were still without power Tuesday night. A map shows at least 139 customers on the road without electricity.

A spokesperson from Dominion Power said Tuesday night that the location was still pending on crews' list.

Other areas with close to 100 residents without power include along Beulah and Old Courthouse Roads. Other pockets of a few dozen without power exist around town as well.

A work list for Wednesday has not yet been released. Vienna Patch will update this article with the information as it becomes available.

As of about 1 a.m. the following roads in and around Vienna are closed because of debris, showing little change since Tuesday, according to 511virginia.org:

  • Hunter Mill Road, from Silk Oak Drive to Tamarack Drive
  • Clarks Crossing Road, near Timberview Court
  • Birdfoot Lane, from Stuart Mill Road to Lawyers Road
  • Juniper Street, off Lee Highway (Merrifield)

Did we miss a road closing? Or are there other areas drivers should take caution? Or are some of these roadways now clear? Leave a comment to help keep us informed.

Poor Liz! Brings back memories of Hurricane Isabel... We were living off Electric Ave back then and it was really frustrating to be one of the hundred or so without power for five days. How is summer going otherwise?

Frederick St SW is still closed due to a downed tree. Power is also out on Frederick and Hillcrest. One Dominion employee has surveyed the damage and said that VDOT is responsible for removing the tree and once it's gone they will restore power. VDOT doesn't work in the town and Vienna said that it's up to the power company. Someone needs to help us, please!

Please complain to the clowns at the Virginia state corporation commissions energy regulation department.
They bear much of the responsibility for this catastrophe of incompetence.
You can reach them at (804) 371-9611 or energyreg@scc.virginia.gov.
