Future of Magruder's Unclear

As rumors spread about grocery store closing, employees and residents are left without answers.

Magruder's Supermarket — the anchor of the Vienna Shopping Center at Courthouse Road and Maple Avenue — could leave Vienna sometime this month.

But neither employees or customers seem to know when, or why.

Rumors about the store's closing began last week; as days went by, shelves started seeming more and more empty.

A store manager who answered the phone Friday said they had heard rumors from customers, but had not been contacted by the DC-area chain's headquarters.

An employee who answered the phone Monday said "it was a possibility" the store would close, but a final decision had not been made, and he had no closing date.

Magruder's closed its Silver Spring location this summer.

Several calls from Patch to Magruder's Company headquarters have not been returned, nor have attempts to contact the shopping center's management, The Rappaport Companies.

Patch will update this story as more information becomes available.

I love Magruders and shop there weekly. But they can't stay in business with empty shelves. Something if difinitly going on. I don't know where I will shop now.

I could never understand the Magruders fan club. It always seemed filthy to me and never inviting to shop. Hope a good tenant takes its place.

I like Magruder's, but would love to see a Trader Joe's in there. As long as it's not another pharmacy or bank - Vienna is lousy with them - I'd be happy.

I was thinking a Trder Joe's would be great as well. They would have to do a LOT of renovation, and I hope hire some of the highly patient workers they have there now.

I will be a bit sad if Magruder's leaves. Magruders is great for affordable locally grown produce. Trader Joe's doesn't compete at all in the produce department, and Whole Foods has significantly higher prices.

Also, I don't agree about Magruder's being dirty. It's not shined up, but I go there to shop for food, not admire myself in the shine of the floor.

My husband was in there yesterday and asked one of the employees what was happening? When were they closing? He was told that one of the two owners died last year and the other is in his late 80's. They are slowly closing all the stores in the company. Vienna should be closed by the end of January.

I like magruders. Have gone there for years. It's not fancy but its a real old fashioned grocery store. There is nothing like it. I do go to whole foods and trader joes. But magruders has good prices and alot of brands I see no where else. So sad

The fact that Magruder's corporate is not being open with their customer and especially their employees makes me very upset. Yes, I will figure out where to buy my groceries now but many of the employees have been there for years - I hope they are able to get new jobs quickly.

Sad. Another locally owned and operated business going by the wayside. Yes, Trader Joe's might be nice, but for fresh, affordable produce, staff that knows who you are, and just a generall overall "local" feel.....Sad.

After work I head to Magruders at least twice a week, dinner for the family is on my mind. Broccoli and Macintosh apples FRESH....Bananas lunch bag size. Over to chicks and steaks, always a sale and experienced help to help you what to choose. Have you had the deli seafood salad? Great lunch stop. Beginning of the week we stock up on milk, best price in town! Why oh why can't we keep what has worked for a very long time, is change always the best? I think not...

I love the friendliness, good prices and that I can get everything I need without traversing a store the size of a shopping mall. I also like that they don't track our shopping habbits and sell the data to who knows whom.

I heard the rumor before Christmas from real estate people. I also heard that the next generation of Magruders wasn't interested in keeping up the family business.

I hope we get a Trader Joes and that they hire many of the current staff(though I suspect many wouldn't want to wear Hawaiian shirts). The last thing we need is another Whole (paycheck) Food store.

Yeah the store could have been cleaner.

Odd that you blast Whole Foods considering they tick most of the checkboxes you apparently like about Magruders. Not speaking about others, but the Vienna Whole Foods is very friendly, they know the locals' names, have great staff, and have an incredible local feel in the bar area, with classes, donations to Vienna elementary schools, etc. You also don't have to traverse a shopping mall, and they don't track spending habits.

The only knock that you have that is actually valid is the price. But just like shopping anywhere else, it's easy to find good value and good deals in Whole Foods. Unless you just look at the end caps, there are some decent deals in there, especially their 365 store brand items. And the bakery, for the staples at least (bread, baguettes, pretzels, bagels), is fantastic and well priced. As for everything else in there, sure, there's definitely some expensive food. But as with many things, you get what you pay for...all food isn't created equal. Do your homework and it's pretty easy to find value in Vienna's farmers markets, Maple Ave Market, and Whole Foods. Or just grab a $1 McDonalds burger if using a cost-basis for your groceries.

Ted Jeff 23 Chill. I didn't "blast" Whole foods. The only thing I said against it was that it was expensive. For you to go further and suggest that I'm ready to live off of $1 McDonalds burgers is troll like. I had hoped we could be more civil on a local bulletin board.

This is very sad. I feel like Magruders is just part of living life in Vienna - what a loss! I agree with Michael Amouri - sad to see another local institution go. And I definitely feel concerned for the employees - Godspeed.

Clayton is right, it may not be spit and polished but it is not dirty. Unfortunately, people in northern Virginia seem to care more about the facade and the name.

I am so sad the Magruders family could leave. I can run down there at 7 am when there is no milk left for cereal, or need something else for the lunchbox. Plus it is so much cheaper than the other groceries. I go to them all, but Magruders is special because it feels like a comfortable old sweater. Not sure why everyone wants or thinks TJ's will automatically go in where there is an empty building.

I think Trader Joe's is an option because it was rumored that they wanted in the Danor (Norm's) Plaza, but Fresh Market got that location.

The biggest problem for those of us the SW/NW side of town is we have no easy supermarket now and it will be at least a year (probably more) before something else will be there and it might not even be a supermarket.

What are the choices we are left with? I won't talk about Giant (too big, nothing unique) and Fresh Market/Whole Foods lacks some of the basics my family likes (and they are much pricier). Costco - here I come.

WalMart! Love it or hate it, it is coming in 2013 to Tysons (see: http://soldsense.com/2012/09/18/walmart-coming-to-tysons-corner-and-tysons-west/) The Magruders family may be doing the wise thing.

Magruders was a Vienna staple for many years BUY Trader Joes would be AWESOME !! It would do very well and Vienna needs a TJ !!! It should have gone where Walgreens went and then where Fresh Market went. Maybe good things DO happen to those that wait....
How true are the rumors that Trader Joes is looking to move in ?

While I love the idea of Trader Joe's at that shopping center, the parking situation there has been messy since Panera came in, and I can't even imagine what it would be like with a Trader Joe's. I'm guessing that a Trader Joe's would bring in more traffic than the Magruders has recently.

...the parking situation at that shopping center makes in a perfect candidate for a Trader Joe's ;-) .Almost every TJs I have gone to has had horrific, awful, white-knuckle parking lots (like the one on Rt 7 and off Pickett!)...

I have lived in Vienna since 1980 and my brother bagged groceries there. In all that time I do not know a single person who actually shops there, so it's interesting to hear so many people like it from the previous posts. I will be happy to see it replaced with TJ's or a good restaurant. I went in one time since the 80s and it was last year - smelled and seemed dirty to me too...just sayin'!

I have been shopping there for produce for 20 years.I am saddened by their closing. What I can't figure out now is why there is very full house of employees present when there stock is so low.It is far from a skeletal crew. And employees are going up and down the aisles straightening what little is left on the shelves.Employees are scrubbing the empty bottom shelves Someone please explain this to me! Is this a way to keep paychecks coming until the last day? Thanks

I've been in Vienna since 1978 and I shop at Magruders. I started shopping there because of the prices. Much lower than the other options. I refuse to pay more when I don't have to. I'm on the east side of Vienna and with the Target just opening in Merrified I may give that a try. Of course, I won't be able to get the meat and produce I get at Magruders.

I don't care much for Trader Joe's but if one goes into this location -- you'd better hope that the town does a much better job on revamping the parking than it did at the Park and Maple location when the Chipotle/Noodles strip went in. That strip has grossly insufficient parking and the same is going to be true if a TJ's goes into the Magruder strip. The current parking situation is bad enough in front of Magruder's; if it stays the same but a Trader Joe's goes in, it will be a nightmare with too much traffic and people circling and circling for spaces (as they do at the TJ's over in Falls Church), etc. And do we really need another grocery store along Maple? I guess it's better than another huge drugstore. But I'd love to see some local business go in that spot.

Not shocked to see Magruder's close. That particular store has always seemed dark and dirty (some people posting here don't seem to care about dirty, cracked floors with tiles pulled up and missing, but I do) and the selection is not good.

I don't consider myself a huge, compulsive neat freak but when there is rotting produce scraps on the floors, as well as grime on the floor that has been there for decades, I don't think I'm being an "uptight NoVa snob" about cleanliness/sanitation and basic food safety. It has nothing to do with local business vs corporate behemoth, but just basic safety, not to mention inviting atmosphere to shop. There are plenty of small, simply furnished locally owned stores that don't look like the back of a loading dock...

Not sure Trader Joes would open a store that could significantly cannibalize their Falls Church store...but would great if they did open.
Word from some local merchants is that an asian supermarket -- a la H Mart -- will be opening in Vienna in the Magruder's space.
