Illegal Immigration Still on Governor’s List of Priorities for 2011
State still awaiting federal approval for state to take on greater role in immigration enforcement.
Gov. Bob McDonnell said he wants local law enforcement agents trained under a federal program that deputizes them to act as Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to investigate criminal acts related to illegal immigration.
"Compared to some other states, Virginia has some pretty tough laws for illegal immigration," McDonnell (R) said in an interview with Patch editors.
The federal program is called 287(g), and it calls for local law enforcement to operate with ICE under a memorandum of agreement. Currently, the Herndon, Loudoun, Manassas and Prince William County police departments have adopted such a memorandums of agreement.
In Prince William County, officers check the immigration status of any person held in physical custody. Fairfax County Sheriff's Office runs a program called Secure Communities, which allows ICE to check the immigration of every person booked by sheriff's deputies. As of Nov. 30, Secure Communities had identified 863 people for deportation since its launch in 2009.
McDonnell said said he supports legislation to have illegal aliens face criminal charges, and he is awaiting for approval of the 287(g) status in the commonwealth.
"I feel strongly that they [illegal immigrants] should be detained and deported. We have asked at the state level for the federal government to grant us more authority to police up illegal immigration in Virginia under 287(g)," he said.

I had to show ID several thousand times as a professional traveler. Legal residents do not see that as a problem.

They are not tough enough or Virginia would return to hiring legal residents to perform highway maintenance.

Every Non-representative including obama and holder need to be IMPEACHED! for not upholding the oath of office they swore to defend the Constitution! If these clowns were to do their job, this would all be a Moot point!
Anchor babies and their criminal parents go, period, and cut the phony tears, you knew you were breaking the law when you crossed the border.
Next shut down any business hiring illegal labor and confiscate all property belonging to the owner. Property will be sold at auction and the proceeds to pay for the massive deportation. Oh and owners go to jail.
Got a better idea? Lets hear it!

Are you ready to pay twice to three times as much for fruits and vegetables? How about all the comfortable suburbanites who get their grass cut and houses cleaned for a pittance? If you want to go around checking, fine - when you find illegal workers get out your checkbook because you'll pay every which way. Right now you might pay in your taxes for some support (much of which does require adequate ID and illegals are denied) - deport them and you will pay the cost of constant deportations, and increased labor cost associated with producing things or obtaining services for menial jobs.
You will pay either way.

"Are you ready to pay twice to three times as much for fruits and vegetables?"
In the 70's and on into the early 80's, most of the picking and packing of produce was paid on a piece work scale. The real hustlers made big money and even the average workers made a decent living. Guess what? Nearly all of them were legal residents or citizens. Employers do not exploit illegals so they can pass the largess on to someone else. The employers are just greedy, they are not social workers.
It is not just the taxes and other benefits that illegals drain from the system. Taxpayers still have to foot the bill for unemployment and other benefits that are paid to the citizen and legal resident families when forced into unemployment and poverty as they are underbid for jobs by the illegal aliens.
Why is there so much compassion for the illegal aliens and none for their victims?
Michelle Carr
5:10 pm on Tuesday, January 11, 2011
The reason that there is compassion is because some people look at lifestyle and the constant threat of deportation and say, "I wouldn't want to live like that. I feel sorry for that person and their family and what they have to endure. Surely they wouldn't have left all their family behind if their life was so peachy there..." While I'm having a thought about feeling sorry for an immigrant family living in tight quarters, I'm also impressed by their work ethic. We're talking about people that are working. I certainly have no patience for someone sitting around.
I never felt that an immigrant person was taking a job from me, or anyone I know. How do they do jobs for less money than everyone else? Is it because they are willing to put up less while they search for a solution to their status? Gee, sounds like good work ethic to me.
Unemployment benefits are funded partially by deductions from paychecks. You pay in to get the benefit. You have to produce documentation to get benefits. If your documents are illegal then that is truly a crime where you are being dishonest. Honest day laborers whose only crime is to want a better life don't hang out in government offices.
I would want someone to have compassion for me if my life here was so bad I needed to abandon my place of birth and find a new place to live. I know you will find something to rebut here, but I am done. I'm sure you follow every single law of the land and can live in a glass house.

Michelle,
I think you have great intentions, but those intentions are doing great damage to the people you wish to help. We have a system in place to deal with Immigration, we even let those in with hardship stories from economically depressed countries. Hundreds of thousands each year legally. We can handle that because they will be absorbed into the system we have created for that purpose.
What we can't handle is the unflux of illegal immigrants who have gamed the system and stepped around everything, both physical and legal, to get here. Paying tens of thousands of dollars to have someone shepherd them across the border so they can work (and sometimes not even get paid) so they can pay back those coyotes (usually drug traffickers). Essentially becoming endentured servants to these crime/gang organizations, emboldening and enriching them - and you have seen what they do with that power. Slavery, Drug-Trafficking, False Identification and Documentation services and Violence are all industries that have flourished in the last few decades as a direct result of our policy and lack of enforcement.
By endorsing the unofficial policy of letting those without proper papers to remian, you are creating a world where all of these industries will flourish and continue the vicious cycle. You are helping the ones you see but are damning many, many others that you cannot. The policy you have endorsed is truly paved with good intentions, but think about the rest of that saying.

"How do they do jobs for less money than everyone else?"
Would 21 people living in a three bedroom apartment have have any bearing on the situation?
I find that the proponents of illegal immigration are usually those that benefit most from the exploitation of illegal aliens, the illegals themselves, the employers, the enablers or exploiters. Then of course, there are those who have to look down on the unemployed as too lazy to work just so they can feel good about themselves. It never works, they still don't feel good about themselves, but they keep on trying it.

They do job's for less than everybody else because they get paid under the table, in cash and then do not report it like we do when we get our check. There is no FICA tax taken out when you get cash.
A guy was arrested last week posing as a Police Officer in PG county. He was shaking down some guys that were less than legal. On one guy he got $1,500 in cash. Only drug dealers and illegal immigrants carry that much cash and illegal immigrants don't carry guns. These people are marked, everyone knows they do all their transactions in cash and are usually not armed. Go to almost any 7-11 at the end of the month and you will see people there giving cash so they can convert it into a Money Order so they can pay their rent.
Who pays the extra in the end? We do, the tax-payer. Because roads, schools and civil servants aren't free. Look at teh school budget over the last ten years, its almost doubled from 1.2 Billion to 2.2 billion and the pupil/teacher ratio isn't much larger, but the ESL ratio certainly is.

Listen. Real criminals who commit real crimes are bad. Drug trafficking is bad. Stealing is bad. Forgery is bad. Go after them with a vengeance. Just don't assume every illegal alien is here to deal drugs, or scam the system with illegal documents and collect welfare.
My fear is that is easy to target the hard worker, the basically honest guy who mows your grass. He doesn't hide, he just minds his own business, and prays not to get deported. Maybe he's even here LEGALLY - but because he doesn't speak English real well, he's got a target on him.
What you all are saying is that the guy I imagine mowing the grass doesn't exist. Never did, never will. I sure hope you are all correct and would love to see numbers of deportations based upon predatory "document checking."
Hope that glass house keeps working real well for you.

I don't understand your glass houses references, maybe because I didn't sneak into this country, haven't had a speeding ticket in Fairfax (you can't say the same), pay all of my taxes and have never been arrested. What I am saying is that I have a right to cast the first stone.
Thanks for the insight, real criminals are bad, I think I get it. How condescending.
Go after everyone who only YOU think aren't doing too much damage to our society. Meanwhile, the sub-system that has been created and fed by people who come here illegally is thriving. You must be getting some pretty good landscaping services for cheap, because you are defending landscapers vehemently.
We are all paying for this system that has been created by people such as yourself and your interests. It costs Fairfax taxpayers $12,000 a year for each kid in school, each year. Statistics say that 5% of the population is made up as illegal immigrants. So with just 5% of 173,000+ kids in fairfax schools, thats $103,800,000 each year we are paying to school the children of illegal immigrants in Fairfax. Now do you see how the impact of your view is costing us as citizens and taxpayers of Fairfax? Of course not, you will come up with something else to focus on, maybe even fall back on the trick that's been used for the last few years to obfuscate this debate by using the racist card.
I'm not opposed to reforming our Immigration laws and then having those who broke those laws pay a heavy fine to stay.
Michelle Carr

So - you know that I have had a speeding ticket or two in the past. How so? Checking on me? I know the power of public documents as well.
I'm so glad you are so perfect. Hope you never have to ever ask for help. Hope you never ever have to feel the humiliation. Hope you never ever have to contemplate what to do about a child or a relative that needs help.
I have no children in the FFX CTY system yet I pay and don't mind. I have a piece of property for a second home for which I pay property taxes on and support a SECOND school system and do it gladly.
My glass house reference indeed mocks you for throwing stones because some day you might be on the receiving end. You never know.
I'm so glad you think you will never slip up, you will never be forced into a situation that will compromise you in any way.
The way you talk you sound like if you found out your neighbor who brought you soup while you were ill and cared for your children when you had no child care was here illegally you would call the immigration people and laugh gleefully at their misery as they were hauled off.
Good day.

Ms. Carr,
I gave you a softball at the end of my last post and you just ranted as it went right by. You aren't interested in debate, you are interested in only shouting me down. I wish you had held to your words from your second post ,"...you will find something to rebut here, but I am done." Two posts later here we are. Your words have no honor and your stance on this issue is just as shaky because it has no legal standing or base besides the bleeding-heart plea.
You have only one argument - different versions of the same emotional plea, because the legal and economic arguments won't cut muster in the court of public opinion or a court of law and we are a nation of laws. Good luck with your stance, its a loser.

I don't need to make illegals look bad, they do a great job on their own.
They have to endure being a second-class citizen because of people like you, who make it just attractive enough to stay by providing food stamps, free healthcare and free schooling for their children that is paid for on the backs of people such as myself. You may not mind but I do and the law is on my side of this argument and not yours.
I bet through all of your pleading and caring, you would NEVER open your home up to illegal immigrants. You would never let them share your home, buy thr groceries, babysit their kids, let them drive your car or volunteer to teach them English. I know this because there aren't a lot of illegal immigrants living with van-driving soccer moms and their families, it would be much more prevalent if that was the case. You talk a big game, but why don't you really embrace your stance if you are THAT emotionally vested in this issue?
When I am being financially burdened by your good will, that doesn't go over too well, so expect a little backlash.
