Introducing Ask an Officer

New feature gives readers a chance to ask questions of the Vienna Police Department

Have you ever had a question for law enforcement but never had the opportunity to ask it? Here's your chance.

Let us know what questions you have and Officer Gary Lose, Vienna Police Department's public information officer, will answer. Send questions to Nicole.Trifone@patch.com or in the comments below.

The number of questions will determine the frequency of the responses.

So what do you want to know about law enforcement in Vienna?

This is a great idea! I don't have any questions now, but will file this away for future reference in case I have questions later, Thanks!

Apparently like many other great ideas, this one is a flash in the pan.

I have a question. Who do I contact to get enforcement of the stop sign at the corner of Abbotsford and Center Street? Commuters turn left off of Lawyers and race down Abbotsford all morning long, blowing right through that stop sign. The middle school and high school bus stop is across the street, there is no cross walk, and it's dark because there is no street light. When the students are crossing to go to the bus stop at 6:20 (high school) on up to 7:10 (middle school) they are dodging traffic. My middle school son has been nearly hit twice since school started. How can we get an occasional officer there between 6:20 and 7:20 in the morning to protect our kids?

Amelie, I saw a VPD officer with a motorcycle sitting at the intersection of Church and Center this morning, watching traffic. Maybe that patrol rotates to different areas each morning -- just a guess ... I'll defer to the official answer when it comes!

We are unfortunately about 100 yards outside the town limits. When I call the Fairfax County Police office, I am always told I am calling the wrong substation. I have spoken to several different offices and I can never find the person I need to talk to in order to express my concern over the situation. I am hoping the Vienna Police officer will have information about the right person to contact... if we ever get a reply to this question.

Does Vienna have a "community watch" or "neighborhood watch" program that offers signs for neighborhoods? My neighborhood hasn't had any issues with theft in years, but wanted to put a sign near a cut-through behind our properties if available.

Fairfax County has signs available through police precincts, but wasn't sure if there was something available through Vienna since we're within Town limits.

Police need to take some action at Sandburg and the W&OD Bike Trail. Bikers ignore their stop signs and speed through the intersection. Twice in the past week I have looked both ways and could see only walkers further up the path. Just as I started across the path, bikers came flying into the intersection ignoring their stop signs. Walkers can be seen further up on the trail but because cars are parked on both sides of the path, it is difficult to see beyond them at bikers travelling at full speed. If a driver didn't stop at a stop sign, they would be ticketed.

No answers yet.
Guess four questions was too many to answer.

What, if anything, can be done about the house on Thelma Circle so police resources are not wasted and something very bad (violent) doesn't happen there? (Do a search for Thelma Circle on this Patch website and you will see what I mean)

Bikers on the trail at Park Street have also gotten out of control. They totally disregard the stop sign and proceed across Park! This has gotten really dangerous to bikers as well as drivers. I had to stop suddenly the other day for a biker who did not stop and was almost rear ended!

Wien will tell you that it's your imagination, Lynda. Bikers ALWAYS have the right of way and the stop signs do not apply to them even if the signs say "required by law." If you see a biker going through the stop sign it's because you did something wrong. Drivers are evil, not bikers.
