LaHood to Get Rail Honor

US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will receive award Tuesday from the Dulles Corridor Rail Association.

The Dulles Corridor Rail Association board of directors will present an award to US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood at its annual meeting Tuesday in Tysons Corner.

LaHood, who stepped in to form a compromise among stakeholders to reduce costs for the Silver Line's Phase 2 in 2011  and to keep Loudoun County from pulling out of the project in 2012, will also be the guest speaker at the event.

DCRA Chairman Del. Kenneth Plum and Vice Chairman Del, Thomas D. Rust will present the award to the Secretary, according to a news release. Fairfax County Board Chairman Sharon Bulova will provide welcoming remarks.

The Silver Line Phase 1 is on schedule and more than 80 percent completed. It is scheduled to open in December 2103.

Correction: "It is scheduled to open in Dec. 2013"

Question: If it's over 80% completed now, why will it take another year to open?

Two reasons:
1. "Snowmageddon" slowed construction substantially (although MWAA claims to have largely caught up--at extra cost--by multiple shifts, etc.).
2. The line is supposed to be complete physically in Aug 2013, but there will be several months of testing to make sure it all works & is safe before its open to passengers.

If it opens in 2103 it's not going to be very useful. BTW how's that pilings testing and the 150 million dollar fund doing that was set aside. Did that money get spent or has it been put back.

Mr. LaHood thinks this double-priced rail ripoff is so great, that it should be a model for similar projects across the country. Unfortunately, people actually fall for this nonsense - so the only thing that is likely to stop that from happening, is national bankruptcy, or maybe the sequestration that is cutting MAP-21 funding of Tifia loans, or Virginia's growing bipartsan unwillingness to waste money on this ripoff project.

Look out, people - the money isn't coming, so you have to pay for this yourselves! Changes the whole picture, doesn't it.
