There are hundreds of nonprofit organizations in Vienna who provide services, recreation and crucial assistance each day.

Patch will take a look at those nonprofits in the coming weeks and months, giving a glimpse into their work and providing information on how residents can become more involved.

This week, we highlight the Optimist Club of Vienna

History: The Optimist Club of Vienna was chartered on June 21, 1957, having been sponsored by the Arlington Evening Optimist Club.There were 26 charter members. Each local club is a part of the greater Optimist Club International which began in 1919 with the motto,"Bringing out the best in kids".  

In 1987 women were admitted as full members and by1992, the first woman president of the Optimist Club of Greater Vienna was installed. There are almost 40 different activities supported by the Vienna area Optimists including:All night high school graduation parties, communication contest for the deaf and hard of hearing, childhood cancer, Eagle and Gold scout awards,essay contest, Special Olympics, Helping Hands citizenship awards, oratorical contest, respect for law, outstanding teacher recognition and numerous sports activities.

Mission: The purpose of Optimist International is to

• Promote Optimism as a philosophy of life
• Promote an active interest in good government and civic affairs
• Inspire respect for law
• Promote patriotism and work for international accord and friendship among all people
• Aid and encourage the development of youth, in the believing that the giving of one's self in service to others will advance the well being of man, his community and the world.

How You Can Help: To be involved in so many activities requires countless hours of volunteer work as well as numerous fund raising activities. While donations are always welcome, the biggest need is for additional members willing to volunteer a portion of their free time to help Vienna area youth.
