Norm's Beer And Wine May Be Here To Stay

Fresh Market says it will work with landmark Vienna store

For the nearly 2,000 people that rallied around Norm's Beer and Wine store on Facebook when it seemed the shop was headed for a shutdown, and the many more who ventured to the store to sign petitions, Friday was a small victory.

Fresh Market, a grocery store chain that will open in the same shopping center as the local shop on Branch Avenue, had originally put a non-compete clause in its lease, which would have forced Norm's to find another location. But the company released a statement Friday saying it would work with owner Norm Yow to try to keep his store in its existing location.

"We're very excited to be coming to Vienna and to be bringing our unique shopping experience to the community.  Being responsible and active participants in the community is what The Fresh Market does and is an important part of who we are," the store said in a statement. "As we have learned more about the Vienna community it has become apparent that Norm's Beer & Wine is an integral part of the fabric of Vienna.  We will work with Norm so that he can continue to serve his patrons from his existing location.  We look forward to being neighbors with Norm's Beer & Wine and together serving the residents of Vienna for many years to come."

Yow said he is grateful for the support he's received from customers over the past few weeks.

"On behalf of my family and co-workers, I want to thank everyone for their overwhelming efforts and support," he said on Friday afternoon via Facebook. "Positive steps are underway with The Fresh Market and as a result continuation of the expressions of support and outreach to Fresh market are no longer productive or necessary."

Vienna Patch will continue to report this story as more updates become available.

I agree with the article regarding "Norm"s" beverage; "Norm's is an integral part of the Vienna community and has been for many years".. (Fresh Market).
It is a business that has remained loyal and supportive to local theater for both Wolf Trap and local high school theater for many years.
Without giving it a second thought Norm Yow has displayed posters for every play and musical that GC Marshall HS has produced over the last 4 years, this as well as posters for other local performances in the arts, such as Wolf Trap's 2008 summer performances of Les Miserables.
Les Miserables included talented performers from area high schools including GC Marshall & George Mason, with the musical's original Broadway cast.
Norm Yow has always done this for free and just smiling, usually says, " Of course, I like theater".
Norm Yow's willingness to share valuable window space for these events makes his store a team player in the Vienna community.
Sincerely,
Keith Conway,
