With 39-33 win, Warhawks improve to 4-1 in the Liberty District.
Madison High School's girls basketball team pulled away in the third quarter of Tuesday's game against Langley High, putting up twice as many points as the Saxons to put the game out of reach and secure a 39-33 win.
The game was up for grabs throughout the first half as the Warhawks (4-1 conference, 6-4 overall) and the Saxons matched each other point for point in both quarters to enter halftime tied at 16-16.
In the third, Madison pushed the tempo and scored 17 points to the Langley's 8, a distance the Saxons couldn't close before the buzzer.
Madison's Mamie Henshaw led all scorers with 9 points. Jonee Finney notched 8; Katie Kerrigan and Jana Tremba scored 7 points a piece.
The win puts the Warhawks at 4-1 in the Liberty District, neck and neck with Fairfax and McLean (both also 4-1). South Lakes remains on top of the district with a conference record of 5-1.
Madison could unseat the Seahawks (12-2 overall) this week: They face off in a 7:30 p.m. tipoff Friday on Madison's home court.
