Photos: Sweet City Desserts Opens On Maple Ave

New coffee and pastry shop features coffee, gelato, specialty deserts

Vienna residents have a new place to cure their sweet tooth with Sweet City Desserts, which opened Friday afternoon on Maple Avenue.

The shop completes one of downtown Vienna's "hidden" roads, joining and on a retail corridor connecting Church Street and Maple Avenue, about half a block west of Center Street.

Co-owner Manny Tagle, who lives in Fairfax, said he'd been dreaming of opening a dessert shop for several years. When he saw the "for rent" sign on the window recently, he saw a way to make that vision a reality.

He said he chose Vienna for its tight-knit community, and "the way people here support each other."

Architect Paul Layer, who also helped design neighboring Pure Pasty, says he hope now that the small retail strip is complete more residents will use it as a pedestrian walkway. Layer said he and the building owner plan to add more greenery outside to encourage people to use it as less of a cuthrough and more of a place to stroll through and enjoy.
