My grandfather Edward Bardello served in the Army during World War II. He was lucky enough to make it home to see the birth of his five children. He's pictured here in 1958 gardening for his family on Long Island. He died a few years later.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed May 5, 1868 by Gen. John Logan and first observed May 30, 1868 when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.
