Vienna Elementary School Garden Gears Up For Second Year

Volunteers are needed for the space shared by the town and VES.

Last April, Vienna officials broke ground on a new community garden — a partnership between the Town of Vienna, Vienna Elementary School and two local businesses that's the first of its kind in town and across much of the county.

Ten months later, the garden is getting ready for its second season, and it's going to need help.

The garden is divided  into two 35 by 75 foot plots: the first cared for by the Vienna Elementary School PTA and the second by the town.

It's has already drawn the support of several community groups and businesses — including Whole Foods Market and Maple Avenue Market, whose owners, Chris and Sara Guerre, have already done much of the plowing and farm work to get the garden off the ground.

Resident Laura Goyer, who developed a plan with Parks and Recreation Director Cathy Salgado for the garden, is keeping residents up to date on progress and volunteer activities throught a listserv; email VESgarden@gmail.com to get updates.

Never heard of the garden before? Watch the video Goyer created of the process in the media player above. You can also watch Vienna Patch's video of last April's groundbreaking by clicking here.
