I go to the school Vienna elementary. And I think that they are making a big deal about the read-a-thon. Coming from a student who has gone to the school for seven years, I think the read-a-thon should be replaced by something that will help kids in need. Because in all seven years i have been to Vienna Elementary we always do the read-a-thon. I think it is time to do something different. And this is coming from a 12 year old who thinks that the read-a-thon should be replaced.

In the 80's when my children went to Vienna Elementary the Read-A-Thon was the MS Read-A-Thon. The kids got pledges from parents and neighbors and the money collected went to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Top readers won prizes. Top readers in the county one year were invited to VP Bush's home for a reception hosted by Barbara Bush and another year got tickets to a Wizard's (I think) basketball game in DC with their names displayed on the overhead screens. My little girl, who is still an avid reader, won two years in a row. Some of the kids in town will know her as their gymnastics teacher at the Community Center...Miss Shannon.
