Vienna Farmers Market Will Move to New Location

Yes, there will be a Vienna Farmers Market — just not where you think.

Vienna's Farmers Market is still planning to offer fresh produce, herbs, pastries, coffee, seafood and meat this summer, but not from its iconic location in the parking lot near the Caboose on the Washington & Old Dominion Trail.

Instead, the market will open May 4 on Center Street in the parking lot of the Faith Baptist Church — right near Water and Caffi fields, the Vienna Fire Station, Town Hall, Vienna Elementary School and the Vienna Police Station.

Market Manager Sarah Brady said the market, supported by the Optimist Club of Greater Vienna, learned recently the market's former space off of Church Street wouldn't be available for the 2013 season.

In a Patch blog post, she detailed the search process, writing, " we are sad that our caboose lot location at Church Street is no longer available – but we are very excited about our new larger space on Center Street."

Among the benefits: more parking, and a larger area for tents and tables, which means the market will be able to bring on more vendors this year, including local coffee shop Caffe Amouri.

For more details, read Brady's full post here.

The market kicks off at 8 a.m. May 4.

Has anyone revealed the reason the old location is not available?

I'd like to know as well -- who's making the market move?

I'd like to know too. I'm not sure why Cafe Amouri would prefer to have a booth at a farmer's market verse having their store a block away from the farmer's market. Doesn't make a lot of sense.

It's like people are just looking for an "enemy" to complain about. Who cares why it moved?

It's in a spot now with more space for vendors, more parking, visibility to draw more people from 123, and it's now away from the W&OD, so you don't have to worry about reporting on all the evil runners and bikers everyone moans about here.

Stop looking for a reason to get angry. This move is a positive thing.

Not everyone thinks it's a positive move. I don't think it will be as visible for people driving through town anymore. Rarely do people drive down Center to get through town. It doesn't really have more parking since there was plenty of parking in the parking lots of the closed offices around the area before, and now people will have to contend with the people parking for Water's field which is just as much of a commotion as the bike trail was. Also, it will likely bring people away from the businesses on Church Street Saturday morning and away from the town green as well. The only positive thing I see is that there's more room for booths, but don't understand why they couldn't just move across to the town green if they really wanted more booths.

I have to agree, I think it's a shame that it's moving from the very central location by the caboose.

But we will still have our bike racks at the new location, so ride to the market if you can!

Wherever you move, I will follow. I look forward to my cup of coffee at the Amouri booth and especially, meeting all the new vendors. See you in May.

Anyone know yet why the market was denied use of the old space? Inquiring minds want to know the reason for such a major decision.
