Original 9:14 a.m.: Water Main Breaks Close Several Roads
Town of Vienna crews are on site repairing three broken water mains Tuesday morning, marking the fifth, sixth and seventh breaks across town in the past week.
Repairs are underway to broken water mains at 214 Apple Blossom Ct., 205 Courthouse Rd. and the intersection of Circle and Harmony Drives SE, according to town alerts.
Several roads will be closed while repairs are underway, including
- Courthouse Road from Locust to Cherry Streets
- the 200 block of Apple Blossom Court
- the intersection of Circle Drive and Harmony
Water service will be interrupted for some residents while repairs are made, according to the town alert.
Center Street from Church Street to Ayrhill Road is also closed due to downed power lines caused by a falling tree.
The series of breaks began last Wednesday, when a water main break shut down Hill Top Road NE and left residents without water on the first of several consecutive days of record heat across the region.
The second was reported on Saturday, when Kingsley Road between Nutley Street and Meadow Lane was closed for several hours as crews made repairs.
On Sunday, town crews made repairs on Glyndon Street NE, shutting down the roadat its intersection with John Marshall Drive.
On Monday, Battle Street was closed between Birch and Plum Streets SW as crews repaired a water main break.

Can you please get a quote from someone at the Town about why this is happening? Are we being sabotaged or attacked? Will all the other parts of town be affected very soon?

Are you serious? Sabotage or attack? How about old pipes?

Hi,
We already contacted the town but didn't hear back in time to include it in this article. We're planning a followup once we do -- everyone is out at the breaks.
The towns pipes are old, like David said, and the heat probably didn't help -- but an official town answer is probably better informed and more in-depth than mine. We'll keep you posted.
Thanks,
Erica

Huge tree down across Center St. just north of Church. Happened about an hour ago. Appears just one parked car hit, no occupied vehicles hit, no one injured - thank goodness!

Mu understanding is the tree landed on a parked car and a moving minivan. The minivan had the driver and three kids in it, but no one was injured, and the van is damaged, but drivable.

Thanks for the update. The people I spoke with when I walked by didn't mention anyone else getting hit. Hope everyone in the van has recovered from the shock.

Hi -- we have another article about this on the site, if you go to the homepage. I was just out there taking pictures -- it is an ENORMOUS tree. Give me a few minutes and I'll have them up!

For years the Town Council has been trying to work with Fairfax County to sell them the town water system (which would result in lower rates for Vienna residents). Unfortunately, Fairfax won't play ball because of the aging infrastructure. Erica, you might want to talk to Edythe Kelleher about this issue. She's been on the front lines of this for years -

Thanks Groovis, we've talked to Edythe (and others .... Howard Springsteen and Mike Polychrones included) about this over the years.
We are still putting together an update for later today/the morning with new town comment, but in the meantime, here is some background on the issue

Good thing I read this before heading out... that's usually my escape route to avoid turning left onto Lawyer's Road. I hope everyone is OK.

Thanks Erica. I drove down Church to Great Harvest and saw that the tree had been stripped of limbs about an hour ago, so progress is happening.

I just drove past the water main break in front of Vienna Tiny Tots about half an hour ago and they are still working on it.

Thanks Amelie -- I actually just got an update from the town (which I am about to add to the top of the story) that says water has been restored there and they are reopening shortly.
