Who's Vienna's Person of the Year?

TIME magazine names their person of the year every year. Tell us who you think should win from our town!

Time magazine invited votes on 40 candidates, including Barack Obama, Gabby Douglas and Kim Jong Un, as the person of the year for 2012. Other options included The Mars Rover and the Higgs Boson Particle.

But who cares about the same-old, same-old? Who is Vienna's Person of the Year—the man or woman who, in Timespeak, “most influenced the news this year for better or worse?"

Michael Amouri - without a doubt. He's friendly, runs a GREAT store, and trains his people to not just be good at what they do, but show kindness for customers having a rough day. People like him keep Vienna a community, a place to be rather than pass through.

Matthew Jordan...he was just honored with highest award (the Bronze Medal) at the U.S. Census Bureau for his work advancing voter language assistance nationwide, which was pivotal in November's election... allowing millions of people the ability to exercise their basic, fundamental right to vote. He even found that his very own Fairfax County needed Spanish-language assistance at the polls.

Matthew has worked at the US Census for just 3 years, and the duration of this project took 8 months, advancing language assistance for national voting needs.

The prestigious Bronze Medal Award is given for “superior federal service;” the highest honorary recognition awarded by the U.S. Census Bureau. The award is given for superior performance of assigned tasks and for significant contributions affecting major programs within the U.S. Census Bureau, including the demonstration of unusual initiative in the development and improvement of methods and procedures.

Cathy Salgado, Town of Vienna, Parks and Recreation Director, Cathy and her team make sure Vienna has all the great events we love for our small town. Cathy manages, 4th of July Fireworks, The Town Green Concerts, and the Vienna Halloween Parade. Cathy and her team also work hand in hand with Viva Vienna and Oktoberfest.
Marty Volk is another great Vienna person of the year. Marty supports anything Vienna including all youth sports programs, little league baseball, football, softball etc. Marty offers teams opportunities to fundraise at the Vienna Inn and is always a helping event for town events.

Vienna is very lucky, numerous "people" of the year!!

Another vote for Amouri. He has created such a great environment in the heart of downtown. His support for madison sports...and he gave away the morning after the Derecho. He used is camp stove, shuttled between home and business.

When I go into Caffe Amouri, I almost always leave in a better mood.

Mayor Jane Seeman. This woman is an inspriation. She works tirelessly for the good of the citizens and businesses in Town - Not always an easy juggling act. Whenever I see her, she is hustling off to another meeting, another function....always to support and promote our town. A wonderful person and leader. Our National leaders could and should learn many lessons from her about REAL leadership.

I'm bending the rules a bit ... instead of one person, what about a group? Last time I counted, there were 15 Vienna neighborhood associations working together to convince Fairfax County not to build a new highway ramp through the stunning forest and stream that buffers Vienna from Tysons Corner. The coalition, called Save Tysons Last Forest, engaged media and politicians from the federal, state and local levels. Every major politician in our area has toured the forest and is aware of this remarkable benefit to our community.
The forest is a Resource Protected Area that was donated to the county by private owners with emphasis on keeping it in its natural state. It is a 100-year flood plain and the stream ultimately leads to the Chesapeake Bay.
The dreaded so-called “Preferred Option 3” is expected to be removed as a viable option on January 15 - the forest is safe and sound. Without this coalition of engaged Vienna citizens, it is likely we would have lost Tysons Last Forest to asphalt and concrete. www.savetysonslastforest.org

I agree with Angie. I recommend the Neighborhood Coalition to Save Tysons Last Forest. www.savetysonslastforest.org

Great community cooperation with 15 different neighborhood associations, 1800 households, 1000+ petition signers, 150+ folks on FB, 3 Vienna Town leaders, 3 County Supervisors, 4 state representatives, and 3 Congressmembers all working together (in a bipartisan fashion, I would add). We're about to save a 33 acre stream valley with wetlands, as well as an historic Ash Grove House (originally owned by Lord Fairfax himself). But even more importantly, we came together as a community to stand for something that mattered to our current and future Vienna residents. And we'll continue to work together as a Neighborhood Coalition to restore & clean up the stream valley (April 6th is the next big cleanup day). And we've found some lost dogs and cats along the way now too (now that we're all connected with electronic media). :-)

I also endorse the Save The Forest Coalition. While it has the diversity and wide range of interests to be expected of any group of 2500 people, it came together on this important issue with a singularity of mind and purpose. In supporting their goal of sensible stewardship of our precious water resources, the best part for me was the discovery that we have a government staffed by intelligent, approachable, knowledgeable and caring professionals. Fairfax County “gets it” that we are all connected by how we treat our watersheds.

I support Save Tyson's Last Forest Coalition. The various neighborhood groups collaborated in an unusual and positive way to preserve the precious green space (and waterways) that makes Vienna such a great place. The group worked closely with a patchwork of state, local, and federal public officials and private parties to reach a consensus to do the right thing for the long term and the greater community. This is a model for future community leadership to continue to address Tysons growth and other complex development issues. The Coalition worked incredibly hard to develop a successful partnership between government and community to achieve a goal of sustainable growth and development.

I nominate myh wife, Pamela Konde, who worked tirelessly as an activist and organizer on behalf of the local community, focusing on saving Tysons Corner’s last forest, advocating for Fairfax County Public Schools, and the checking development of a new Tysons Corner Urban Center. This year she served as leader fo the Save Tysons Corner Last Forest (http://www.savetysonslastforest.org/), Vice-President of Advocacy, Fairfax County Council of PTAs (http://www.fccpta.org/), President, Greater Tysons Green Civic Association (http://www.greatertysonsgreen.org/), and President-elect of the Westbriar Elementary School PTA (http://www.westbriarpta.org/).

I nominate Pamela Konde for her tireless work to bring various neighborhood associations, county officials and many others to save Tyson's Last Forest. It all started with a call for help from a neighbor and grew into a bigger awareness of the impact Tyson's growth and plans will have on our environment. Pam, selflessly, gives her time and efforts to help others. She made countless calls to county officials, attended a gazillion meetings and organized many other meetings so others had an opportunity to voice concerns and questions. All of us benefit from the success of saving Tysons Last Forest.

I nominate Pam Konde as Vienna's Person of the Year for her tireless and relentless work in protecting one of the few green neighborhoods during the Tyson's Development process. In every area from making sure our neighborhood would be protected in the Comprehensive Plan to fighting government encroachment with eco damaging ramps being constructed through our forest, she has been tireless.

VIenna celebrated sweet success this Tuesday when Save Tysons Last Forest, led by Pam Konde, saved 33 acres of gorgeous forest and stream - the perfect natural buffer between Vienna and Tysons ... and our own little Central Park to enjoy for years to come. This kind of effort is unusual today. We have a lot to be proud of and it speaks volumes for our community's character. Yay Vienna! And thanks to the hundreds of active Vienna citizens behind Save Tysons Last Forest AND to Pam Konde!

I would also like to nominate Pam Konde for person of the year. The Save Tysons Last Forest is also worthy, but i believe that without Pam's leadership and tireless efforts, the Coalition would not have been nearly as effective. The fact that the Coalition was successful in saving this forest from destruction for a road was a great achievement with many many people working on it. But Pam's leadership was truly the key to success.
