Highlights from High School sports gamesThe Madison Girls Varsity Soccer team finished the regular season with a 2 – 0 win Wednesday against the Fairfax High School Rebels. Freshman Lindsey Tyrell scored her first goal of her varsity career in the first half. She was also fouled within the penalty area in the second half and Rachel Moore scored the penalty, and her sixth goal of the season, with a strike to the low right post. The Warhawks ended the season with six wins, four losses and three ties. They play their next game either at TJ or McLean on Monday. The loss drops Madison to 7-4 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty District. In a boat christened in the name of a dedicated Warhawk Crew volunteer earlier that day, the Madison High School men’s first eight commandeered the “Glenn K. Burger” to a come-from-behind first place victory over Washington-Lee Saturday at the Smokey Jacobs Regatta. The men’s first eight win, in a time of 4:36:2, was just one of five first place finishes for Madison boats at the regatta. All Madison boats placed. The team named its new boat for Glenn K. Burger, a long-term volunteer who has been with the team since his daughter Jessica joined squad in during its second season. Madison's …
In a Friday showdown between Madison and McLean High schools, whose softball teams share second place in the Liberty District, the Warhawks came out on top, beating the Highlanders 7-4 to move ahead to 5-1 in district play. Madison is now 9-3 overall. The game started out as a pitcher's duel as both pitchers kept the offenses quiet early. Madison's bats struck first as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. The Madison High School softball team (8-3) returned from spring break Tuesday to knock out a 5-4 victory over Langley High School in an important Liberty District matchup. It was clear from the outset the Warhawk players spent some time away from the softball field, as they dug themselves an early hole, trailing 4 to 1 after three innings of play. The Madison High School softball team snapped a three-game losing streak with an 8-3 victory over the visiting South Lakes Seahawks on Thursday night. Tori Lipnicky went 2 for 3 with an RBI and was HBP to lead the offense. Ally Grasso tripled and and drove in a run, and Kristyn Buscemi went 1 for 4 with an RBI. Madison High School's softball team went 1-2 in their games this weekend. On Friday, the Warhawks hosted cross-town rival Marshall High School and walked away with a 15-0 victory. The faceoff was a shortened five-inning game ended by the 10-run rule. Tori Lipnicky led the potent Warhawks offense, going 3 for 3 with a walk and two RBIs. The Madison Boys Lacrosse Team (1-2) split two games this weekend with a 6-3 loss to Chantilly on Friday night and a 14-13 win over local rival Oakton High School on Saturday night. In the opener against Chantilly, the Warhawks were behind 5-1 at halftime. The second half turned into a tough defensive battle with limited scoring and numerous penalties. Madison held Chantilly to one goal in the second half on an open net late in the game, but could only muster two goals for themselves for the final 6-3 result. The Marshall Girls Lacrosse team opened their season Wednesday night with an 18-7 win against the Washington and Lee Generals. Though coming off their best season in school history, the Statesmen got off to a slow start against the Generals, down 0-3. Once they got in their groove, though, they rattled in four consecutive goals and never looked back. By halftime, Marshall took an 8 - 4 lead and scored 10 goals in the next half, winning 18-7. After an impressive 22-6 season, Marshall High School's wrestling team finished second to Langley in the Liberty District Wrestling Championships on Saturday Head Coach Jason Planakis was named Coach of the Year as nine statesmen wrestlers qualified for the Northern Region Championships this week. Christian Valencia (106), James Cusack (120) and Matt Crawford (285) all won their weight classes, and Crawford's pin in the heavyweight final marked his 100th career high school win. The Madison Warhawks employed a suffocating defense Tuesday night to shut down the Thomas Jefferson Colonials in a 60-22 Liberty District victory. The Warhawks played their best defensive game of the season, holding the Colonials to its lowest scoring total of the season and giving up only eight points in the first half. Coming off its Friday loss to Stone Bridge, the first loss in nine games, the Madison High School girls basketball team bounced back with a 52-40 win Monday against the McLean Highlanders. With the victory Madison retains sole possession of first place in the Liberty District at 8-1. The team is 13-4 overall. Using a deliberate offense, McLean edged to a slim 6-5 first period lead. In a fiercely contested Liberty District match-up, the Madison High School girls basketball team defeated the Fairfax Rebels 58-46 Tuesday night -- their eighth straight victory. The win puts the Warhawks in control of the Liberty District as they prepare to close out the first half of the regular season Friday against second place Stone Bridge (5-2). Madison took an early lead Tuesday but the Rebels continued to battle back, leaving the outcome of the game in doubt until the waning minutes of the final whistle. The Madison Girls Basketball team won its fourth consecutive road game Friday night, beating the McLean Highlanders, 58-42. Trailing 15-13 after the first quarter, Madison clamped down on defense to take a narrow 22-19 lead at halftime. The Warhawks found their offensive groove in the third quarter, outscoring the Highlanders 18-11 to take a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter. Marshall High School Field Hockey held on to an early lead to beat Oakton High School 3-2 on Monday, improving their record to 8-1. The Statesmen shined in the first half, leading 2-0 going into halftime thanks to goals by juniors Madeleine Lewsen and Emily Sexton, assisted by Maddie O'Beirne and April Reinhart, respectively. James Madison High School shutout W.T.Woodson 24-0 on Saturday to win its home opener and even its record at 1-1. While temperatures soared to well over 90 degrees last weekend, the Vienna Youth Soccer Freedom Red U10 girls team participated in the prestigious Virginian Soccer Tournament. Freedom Red went undefeated in their division with the team playing strong defensively and creating many goal scoring opportunities. The heat and sun were oppressive factors but the team never backed down. They had four shut-outs and outscored their opponents 19-2 across the three day and five game tournament. Madison High School singles tennis player Dan Sablik lost to Herndon High School's Philip Nelson in the Northern Region Singles and Doubles Championship on Wednesday, 6-3, 6-1. "Nelson's serving was incredible," Madison Coach Glenn Adams said. "He probably had about 15 service aces -- balls which the receiver doesn't even touch."
