Shepherd's Center Open House and Historic Vienna Seeks Volunteers

The Shepherd’s Center of Oakton-Vienna will host an open house at 10 a.m. for its Adventures in Learning Fall Classes set to run from Sept. 19 to November 7. 

Historic Vienna, Inc. (HVI) is looking for persons to volunteer as storekeepers and docents at the Freeman Store and Museum. Requirements are an interest in history, particularly Vienna and the Civil War era, availability on Sundays from 12 pm to 4 pm and a warm and welcoming personality. HVI will provide training and support. This is a wonderful way to engage with your community and provide a real service to a great organization. Andy Warhol silver clouds opening reception at Artisphere. For the first time in the DC area, 150 of the “clouds” made in the mid-1960s with the plastic-like Scotchpak material will be on display at the Arlington art space. The opening reception runs from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Free! The exhibit is on loan from the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. Artisphere is located at 1101 Wilson Blvd., Arlington. 703-875-1100

In county news, the Board of Supervisors announced this week the appointment of Jeffrey K. Weiler as the executive director to the Fairfax County Retirement Boards, effective this coming Monday, Sept. 16. According to a county news release, Weiler has more than 30 years of experience in the public sector in financial and administrative management. He is currently the chief financial officer of the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nev., where he is responsible for the leadership of the Finance and Operations Division that oversees budget development, accounting, risk management and payroll, among other items. Weiler previously worked for Fairfax County Public Schools as a senior budget analyst, coordinator of applications support and coordinator of budgets, from 1983 until 1998. Weiler has a masters degree in business administration and a bachelors of science in finance from Virginia Tech. Weiler’s salary will be $158,000.
