Giant Fireball: What the (HECK) Was That?

Reports of sightings come in from Virginia, DC and around the region.

(Editor's note: We have corrected Lancaster, Md. to read Lancaster, Pennsylvania, thanks to our eagle-eye readers! Thanks.)

If you were outside last night at about 8:30 or so, maybe you saw it: A giant fireball hurtling across the region.

The American Meteor Society has received more than 60 reports of the fireball, which appears to have been over Lancaster County, Pennyslvania, but plenty visible from Virginia and Washington, DC.

WTOP reported that multiple reports of a giant fireball came in to its newsroom, including from one listener traveling eastbound on Interstate 66 toward the Route 7 exit.

Greg Redfern, WTOP's space expert, said he and another person saw the fireball about 8:25 p.m.

Reports of sightings also came from New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
