Vienna Chapter of N.O.W. Hosts Feminist Majority Foundation's Talk: "Election 2012: Vote As If Your Life Depended On It: It Does."

In a response to the Virginia Board
of Health’s recent decision to uphold the Virginia’s Assembly’s regulations regarding women’s health clinics, the Vienna Chapter of N.O.W.  is partnering with local chapters of The Feminist Majority and Planned Parenthood for two events.  Alice Cohan, political director of the Feminist Majority will be leading a talk
and follow-up discussion, “Election2012: Vote As If Your Life Depended On It: It Does, “on Friday, September 21st at 10:00am and then again on Friday, October
12th, at 10:00am
, Dr. Laura Meyer, CEO of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, will be
sharing the latest news and strategies regarding the conservative rights’attacks on its organization and women’s health initiatives. Attendees do not
have to be members of N.O.W. to attend either event, and N.O.W. is a non-partisan organization.  The location for
both events is available to those who call 703.861.3386.

“The Virginia Assembly has chosen
to ignore the doctors, law professors, and women, who argued for them, to stand
by their convictions,” stated Val Dutton, N.O.W Vienna Virginia’s chapter president.  “Instead, the Board of Health
gave way to pressure by Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, reversing their June decision to ‘grandfather’ in existing women’s health clinics.  This decision will likely shut down women's health clinics in our State.”

Dutton further commented that co-hosting events with Planned Parenthood and The Feminist Majority Foundation “makes sense since we have similar goals to advocate and serve women’s economic and health care rights.  The political conservative fringe has viciously attacked women’s rights for too long. We heard U.S. Senator Todd Akin of Missouri proclaim that if women are victims of
“legitimate” rape, then they can’t get pregnant. Bob Marshall, seven-term politician from our own State, claims that disabled children are a punishment to women for
having abortions. Can these men be any further disconnected from reason?
Tragically, these are only a few in the political spotlight that are mouthing
such extremist views. As women—Democrat, Republican or Independent—it’s urgent
that we support the organizations that fight to preserve our reproductive
rights. If we don’t, we may lose all of what we have, what others before us
fought so hard to win.”
