Parks and Recreation Asks Families to Find Vienna's 'Hidden Gems'

Photo scavenger hunt deadline is Friday, Aug. 19.

This summer, the Town of Vienna is looking for “Vienna’s No. 1 Recreating Family."

How can you earn the title? Through pictures and imagination.

The Parks and Recreation department is asking local families to go out with their cameras and take pictures for a town , Parks and Recreation Coordinator Enrique Guzman said.

To enter the hunt, families must submit photos in seven categories: play in a safe place, explore nature, celebrate the arts, Vienna hidden gem, play a sport, follow a trail, and making lasting memories.

The photos are due by Aug. 19 and become property of the Town of Vienna upon submission.

Guzman said Parks and Recreation tried to organize this scavenger hunt last year, but did not receive much of a response. This year, though, he said he has received about 14 requests for more information about the scavenger hunt so far, Guzman said.

“We always try to come up with new programs in the Parks and Recreation department,” Guzman said. “Rather than do the same things over and over, we really try to come out with new stuff or different stuff for our residents to do and we thought it would be a good idea to do.”

Looking at what other jurisdictions in Virginia had done in the past, Guzman remodeled the scavenger hunt into something that would work best in Vienna, he said.

Guzman said the winner will be selected through a drawing and the winning family will be named Vienna’s “No. 1 Recreating Family,” with their picture taken and posted on the town’s website and published in the town’s brochure.

A committee will also select a photo from the competition to publish in the town brochure, he said.

“Since this is the first real year that people are asking me about getting the form and registration, I’m really anxious to see what comes back, what people in Vienna think and their interpretation of Vienna with their family is,” Guzman said.
