Area could also see heavy rainfall, flooding, National Weather Service warns.

By Jason Spencer

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for much of the greater Washington area, including Fairfax, Arlington, Prince William and Loudoun counties in Northern Virginia. The cities of Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax, Manassas and Manassas Park are also included.

A tornado watch means conditions exist that could produce a tornado. A tornado warning means a twister has been spotted.
