Video: Recreating The Battle Of Vienna
Residents gathered on Saturday night to watch re-enactors put on the famous skirmish
In June of 1861, Union Troops were traveling by train via the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad and began to pass through Vienna.
But as they rounded a curve, something went wrong: Confederate forces attacked, forcing the Union soldiers to retreat.
On Saturday, re-enactors from several states brought that battle to life on the fields abutting the Community Center.

It was the fifth "skirmish" of the Civil War, and many historians believe it was a precursor to the First Battle of Manassas.
The event included cannons, guns and a replica of the original train, on loan from the Town of Strasburg, Va., which is building it for their own celebrations.

The re-enactment was the "Signature Event" for the town's observation of the Civil War Sesquicentennial. State-wide, towns and counties will hold events and activities for the war's 150th anniversary throughout the next four years.
Before the battle, the Town of Vienna and Historic Vienna Inc. recruited groups and re-enactors
