Vienna Police Department Remind Motorists 'Click it or Ticket'

Local police will be focusing on seatbelt enforcement and awareness throughout Memorial Day weekend.

The Vienna Police Department is reminding motorists about seatbelt enforcement laws with their "Click it or Ticket" campaign this weekend.

"We are hoping that the message will get out to drivers and passengers about the importance of wearing seatbelts," said MPO Gary Lose, public information officer for the Town of Vienna Police Department.

Patrol and traffic enforcement units are on the lookout for motorists and their seatbelt use, and "we would like to see 100 percent compliance," Lose said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports in 2011, 21,253 occupants of passenger cars, trucks, vans and SUVs were killed in motor vehicle crashes nationwide— and 52 percent were not wearing seat belts at the time of the fatal crashes.

"Seat belts are the most effective safety feature ever invented and have helped save thousands of lives," Lose said. "Sadly, one in five Americans fail to regularly wear a seat belt when driving or riding in a motor vehicle."

"By participating in the "Click It or Ticket " Campaign we will continue to reduce the number of seat belt fatalities on America's roads," Lose added.
