Vienna and the rest of Northern Virginia are under a Wind Chill Advisory Tuesday starting at 6 p.m. until Wednesday at noon, according to the National Weather Service. The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 p.m. Tuesday. The NWS issued the advisory at 2:42 a.m. Tuesday.

Accumulations of 6 to 10 inches are expected; the heaviest snow should fall during the midday to afternoon hours with snow tapering off tonight.

The wind chill is expected to be between 5 to 15 degrees below zero Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. Temperatures Tuesday will be in the 20s, dropping into the teens Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night. Low temperatures will be in the single digits. High temperatures Wednesday will be in the teens.

Winds will blow from the northeast from 5 to 10 MPH, increasing to 10 to 20 MPH, with gusts around 30 MPH Tuesday. Winds will be 15 to 25 MPH Wednesday morning with gusts up to 40 MPH.

Expect roads to be snow covered and slippery; blowing snow will reduce visibility. Traveling will become dangerous Tuesday afternoon. Significant impact is expected for the afternoon and evening commute Tuesday.

The wind chills Tuesday night and Wednesday morning could lead to hypothermia or frost bite to exposed skin.

Residents should only travel in an emergency; if you must travel, keep a blanket, flashlight, food and water in your vehicle, NWS warns. Make sure you wear hat and gloves if you go outdoors.
