The Infamous Stringdusters Return to State Theatre

The bluegrass group brings its grammy-nominated sound to Falls Church on Saturday night.

The Infamous Stringdusters have three albums under their belt. But none of them have captured the group's brand of intense acoustic country music in the free-spirited environment of their live performances.

“About a year ago we wanted to do a live record, so we planned these five shows for some of our favorite places to play,” said Travis Book, who plays bass and sings for the band. “Our shows are a real open atmosphere, people are encouraged to sort of do whatever it is that they want."

The group's "We’ll Do It Live” tour concludes at the State Theatre in Falls Church on Saturday night, giving fans  a chance to be a part of the bluegrass band's first live record. All of the songs performed on the five-stop East Coast tour will be put together as a live studio album to be released on Sugar Hill Records later this year.

The grammy-nominated Stringdusters have been playing together for five years. Starting out in the music capital of Nashville, the group made a name for itself for its catchy guitar and string-heavy songs about relationships. It was 2007 that jettisoned the group into musical stardom, as they won  Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Emerging Artist of the Year at the International Bluegrass Music Association Awards for their debut album “Fork In The Road.”

More recently, they earned a 2011 Grammy nomination for Best Country Instrumental Performance for their song “Magic #9.”

Book said the band is happy to be returning to Falls Church, an area where they have a strong following.

“The D.C. area is one of our favorite places to play," Book said. "We’ve been playing there since we started five years ago."

Book said the State Theatre became one of their favorite venues after the great vibes they got from the crow during the Stringdusters' performance there in November with Trampled By Turtles,  a bluegrass band from Minnesota.

“There’s a social scene, there’s a bar scene, there’s people dancing and people drinking and people sitting and listening also. That room in Falls Church is unique,” Book said. “There’s places where people can sit and be comfortable and have that experience, as well as places to throw down and dance and sort of let loose.”

The Stringdusters perform from 8 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday at the State Theatre, 220 N. Washington St., Falls Church. Tickets are $16. For more information, click here.
