Sub-titled, "Ask the Esthetician", the most commonly expressed area of concern is the under-eye area!

Not only have I asked myself, but many women have asked me, “Is there anything that I can do for the circles under my eyes?” Almost every time that I have approached a makeup counter, the first thing that I hear about is the need to correct my dark circles. Or, “You look tired”. Truth or Sales tactic, maybe both, but mostly SalesTactic.

Firstly, the appearance of darkness under the eye usually isn’t from lack of sleep. Secondly, the more you tried to conceal something, the more noticeable it becomes.

Let’s start with an eye cream to correct or prevent, as much as possible. Use an eye cream which contains ingredients that can reduce puffiness and can help to increase circulation. I prefer botanical based products, I use Yonka Phyto-Contour which has a invigorating effect, and doesn’t cause makeup to travel.

When choosing a concealer, think about color-correction. We are not trying to create a shield to block the uneven coloration, so the concealer doesn’t have to be dense. Usually, the most noticeable color under the eye is a blue/purple. Based on color theory, use the color opposite on the color wheel to create a neutral. For most of us, that would be a peachy color, more gold for some, more orange for others. Also, use a lot less than what you think you will need. Consider applying the concealer only on the line of demarcation, just on the transition line from cheek to eye, then blend upward.  Since you will want your eye-area concealer to be creamy, use a synthetic brush or sponge for blending (natural hair brushes are absorbent and are better for dry products). You can use the warmth of your fingertips to help too. If the color the concealer doesn’t match your coloring, then you will use a small amount of your foundation, tinted moisturizer, mineral powder to unify the look. Certainly more advanced makeup techniques can be used, highlighting and contouring etc, but we will keep it simple.

jane iredale mineral cosmetics has a terrific selection of concealers, which contains pure ingredients and pharmaceutical grade minerals. I mostly use Circle/Delete 2, Active Light products or Enlighten during salon makeup applications.
