Vienna Restaurant Inspections: August 2012

Three Vienna restaurants inspected; two had critical violations

Below are Vienna restaurants included in the most recent Virginia Department of Health's restaurant inspection reports. The full reports can be accessed on the health department's website:

Date of Inspection: Aug. 22
Critical violations: 0
Non-critical violations: 1
-Observed the handwashing sink in the men's restroom was providing water at a temperature of 83F.

Caribou Coffee No. 839
332 Maple Avenue
Date of Inspection: Aug. 9
Critical violations: 3
Non-critical violations: 4 
-Upon discussion with the person-in-charge, one or more of the elements of an effective employee health policy is either missing or incomplete. A complete employee health policy is required to be in place at the food establishment. At the time of this inspection, the Health Department provided and reviewed handouts and resource information in a red folder labeled "Employee Health Policy." (Critical)
-Observed that sign or poster that notifies food employees to wash their hands is not provided at all handwashing sinks used by food employees. 
-The following food item(s) were observed cold holding at improper temperatures using a calibrated food temperature measuring device: Cut melon in fruit cup at display case. (Critical)
-The following ready-to-eat food that is made using a combination of ready-to-eat, potentially hazardous ingredients is not properly dated for discard using the date of the first-prepared ingredient: Half and half creamer dispenser in 2 dr Traulsen. (Critical)
-Dispensing and/or in-use utensils improperly stored between use as follows: Scooping spoons for chocolate chips were stored with food contact end up, ice scoop handle is touching ice in ice machine.
-Unwrapped knives, forks, or spoons were not stored with the handles up at the drive thru service area.
-Observed that there is no lighting provided in the dry storage areas.

-There is no Certified Food Manager present at the beginning of the inspection. (Critical)
-Upon discussion with the person-in-charge, one or more of the elements of an effective employee health policy is either missing or incomplete. A complete employee health policy is required to be in place at the food establishment. At the time of this inspection, the Health Department provided and reviewed handouts and resource information in a red folder labeled "Employee Health Policy." (Critical-Repeat)
-The ambient air temperature measuring device located in the following cold or hot hold unit is not accurate in °F: 1) Norlake walkin cooler (observed 50F when it was recorded at 41F)
-Observed that the following is not maintained in good repair: 1) Floor tiles around the water heater.
-Observed that mops are improperly stored between use.
