Expect I-66E Gridlock Friday for 9/11 Motorcycle Ride

Drivers can expect major delays and gridlock on I-66 east Friday afternoon and into the evening hours as more than 1,800 motorcyclists participate in a 9/11 tribute procession into Washington, D.C.

Virginia State Police advises those traveling into the city Aug. 19 to find another way as riders from America's 9/11 Remembrance Foundation travel from Somerset, Penn., to the Pentagon.

I-66 East will be closed from to traffic from the Capital Beltway to Route 110 southbound as the riders make their way into D.C. No traffic will be allowed to access the on-ramps to I-66 eastbound between Fairfax and Arlington Counties.

As a result, there will be heavy traffic congestion and delays along I-66 and I-495. Travelers heading into the District may take I-495 north to the George Washington Memorial Parkway or I-495 south to Route 50 east (Arlington Blvd.).

There will also be heavy delays along the Dulles Toll Road and Dulles Greenway before the riders reach I-66. To see a map of the affected areas in Northern Virginia, click here.

The motorcyclists will end their journey at the World Trade Center in New York City.
