Week In Review: Follin Lane Facility To Construct 9/11 Memorial, Police Investigating Vehicle Larcenies

Madison and Marshall High Schools to host community dialogues about discipline

Flagpoles from the World Trade Center and remnants of the Pentagon will be incorporated into a memorial outside of an industrial commercial facility on Follin Lane, known as “Liberty Park,”

At its meeting Monday night, The Vienna Town Council approved the Liberty Park Artifact Memorial Plan, which will include the use of six artifacts in and around the office space at 801 Follin Lane SE, occupied by the Terrorist Screening Center.

 “We were born out of 9/11,” a representative from the facility said. “It’s a way to remind our employees of why they’re here.”

The plan, created by Hickok Cole Architects and Vika, Inc., Engineers, includes  three restored flagpoles from the World Trade Center, each 60 feet tall, which will be arranged around a small stone memorial in the front of the facility, formerly known as The Page Building. The memorial will also include a piece of limestone from the Pentagon, among other artifacts.

Vienna Police arrested a man they believe is responsible for several overnight vehicle tampering and larcenies between April 26 and 27. Police arrested Clarence Marcel Baldwin, Jr., 23,  of Greenbelt, Md. on April 27 Police responded to several reports of vehicle tampering and larceny on Tapawingo Road, SE, Moore Avenue, SE, and Dogwood Drive, SW in the early hours of April 27. It is unclear whether or not those vehicles were locked, police said.

This week's also lists several larcenies from unlocked vehicles.

The last time Del. Mark Keam (D-35th) ran for the Virginia House of Delegates, there weren't many voters in Vienna or Oakton that knew his name. “I was somebody that most people hadn’t heard of,” he told supporters gathered at his re-election campaign kick-off celebration on Saturday. “I had nothing more to show than my resume for my experience. All I had was passion.”

Gov. Bob McDonnell is urging the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority  to reconsider its plan for an underground Metrorail station at Dulles Airport. McDonnell (R) to go with a more expensive plan for the project.

Homeowners, builders, architects and remodelers will soon have a way to earn recognition for their energy-saving and conservation efforts. The Community Enhancement Commission received approval from Town Council on Monday night , an initiative that will educate the community about making greener home choices, and recognize and reward them for meeting certain home standards.

Schools

. School Superintendent Jack Dale and County Executive Anthony Griffin want kids in school, they just take different approaches on how they should get there.Both agree the long lines outside Fairfax schools have to shorten. While Griffin eyes infrastructure and design plans to solve the problem, Dale thinks it's first about changing minds.

Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Jack Dale  has asked every middle and high school principal to convene a community meeting to discuss the 10 pending disciplinary recommendations he made to the School Board last month. Dale made the announcement to the 25 PTA representatives at the regularly scheduled Superintendent’s Parent Advisory Council meeting on Tuesday.

The Fairfax County School Board a judge ruled Friday morning. “The unfortunate thing about this argument is that there is nothing in those documents that makes a hill of beans of difference, but the legal issue has been brought,” said Judge Leslie M. Alden during the hearing.

More than 30 vendors, from food suppliers to remodelers, advocacy clubs and biking groups, set up In its third year, the expo also featured something new: a Green Business Recognition, given by the Town Business Liaison Committee to a local business that adopts green practices. This year's recipient was Maple Ave Restaurant.

Long-time patrons of the McDonald's Restaurant at 544 Maple Ave W have been missing their sweet teas and milkshakes. The restaurant, known affectionately as the "Madison McDonald's," Crews are in the process of completely razing the site and replacin the building with a new structure. Construction will last a total of 105 days.
