At Madison, students donated cans during their third period class, said Michael Land, student body president of the James Madison High School Student Government Association. A student who brought in 10 or more items at once won a full-sized candy bar-- the largest classes averaged 150 items total per student, Land said.

Elizabeth Madero's Spanish class and Margaret Foarde and Heidi Stafford's guided study class both donated the most items per student, winning a hot IHOP breakfast. Second and third place classes won donut or bagel breakfasts, Land said.

As part of the drive's rock theme, the school also had "Tour Weeks" for different foods that were most needed this season, like pasta, dried beans, fresh fruit and pasta. They were worth two items each in the class rankings, and a band played during the lunch hour to promote the items.

In addition to the 10,177 pounds of food donated at the school, students also collected items throughout Vienna and Oakton.
