Oak Tree Falls Near Northside Park, Leaving Nearly 2,000 Without Power

Estimated repair time for incident that knocked out four telephone poles is unknown

 A large oak tree that fell near late Monday night took out four telephone poles, leaving 1,988 Dominion customers in Vienna without power.

Dominion Power received its first report about the accident around 10:15 p.m,, a spokeswoman said Monday night. Dominion immediately began switching nearby residents to alternative power feeds to restore power to as many residents as possible, the spokeswoman said.

Within 10 minutes, 875 of those customers had power restored. Around 11:30 p.m., power returned to 900 more. As of midnight, 135 customers were still without power.

A Vienna Patch reader that lives near the corner of Park Street and Hilltop Road NE said her power turned on again around 11:30 p.m.

"Police said it would take day to get power, but it just came back on," she wrote. "Hope it stays on."

Crews were still enroute to the scene around midnight, where a supervisor was waiting to direct repairs. There is not yet an estimated repair time, the spokeswoman said.

"As you can imagine, four telephone poles is going to cause a lengthly outage," she said. "We're trying to get power back to as many residents as possible, as quickly as possible."
