Photos: A 30-Year Look Back At Fourth Of July In Vienna

A glimpse of celebrations in the 1980s and 1990s

It's not clear exactly when Fourth of July celebrations began to happen annually in Vienna, but many town employees say it was at least 40 years ago.

What did celebrations look like back then?

Here's a glimpse. Patch put in a call to town employees at who collected photos from the town's files and their personal collections and handed them over. We've scanned them into this photo gallery. Though many aren't dated, some are: The earliest dated photo we found was from 1981, though the attire in some of the pictures suggests they could be taken even five or 10 earlier.

Most are from the 1980s or the 1990s and tell a fun story about some traditions: One photo shows some residents climbing a tall pole; another proves that even an alligator made a visit to Vienna for the celebration of the nation's birth.
