Vienna Business: Urban Mattress Opens in Vienna

Urban Mattress is now the newest of Vienna's mattress stores. But owner Nathaniel Hoelk says his store is nothing like the other chains in town.
Urban Mattress is a franchise based in Denver, Co., but Hoelk's store is just the 10th location nationally and the first on the east coast, he said.

"The great thing is we are all friends and family, each of us who are owners," Hoelk said. "We're all locally owned and operated, each of the owners lives in the community and gives back to the community."

The store, located next door to Jammin Java in the former Stalcup's Hardware space, celebrated its official opening Thursday with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Members of the Vienna Business Association, the Town Council and Mayor Jane Seeman were all present for the ceremony, among other community members.
Hoelk and his wife arrived in Northern Virginia in January with the intention of opening their new store on the east coast. Once the couple found a space for the store next to the popular Vienna coffee shop, it took them less than a month to bring in inventory and arrange the store to their liking.

Hoelk said he was attracted to the storefront's calm vibe and open space as a way to make the mattress buying experience easier for customers, and added that the business prides itself on being community service driven.

Two percent of Urban Mattress's revenue will be donated by the Hoelks to one of five charities in the area. As of Friday, the couple is still taking recommendations for charities with which they can explore a partnership.

The store carries many of the major brands on the market, including Tempur-Pedic and Lumina, along with Evosleep and Vi-Spring.

"It's been a long and exciting process," and with the store officially open for business, Hoelk later added, "I think we've been very warmly received."
