Video: Reliving Civil War History

Before the re-enactment of the Battle of Vienna on Saturday, residents learned about everyday life in the Civil War, both on and off the battlefield.

When it comes to retelling war stories, people tend to remember the big moments: The attacks. The victories. The defeats. The losses.

But what's often forgotten is the simplicity of everyday life – for soldiers and civilians – in times of warfare.

As part of – an 1861 skirmish that marked the first time a train was used tactically in battle  – Historic Vienna Inc. and other volunteers took residents back in time with a recreated Civil War-era encampment on the grounds surrounding the Community Center.

The all-day encampment featured demonstrations, games and activities for kids, adults and families alike.
