Video: Vienna Youth Players Take Stage For Annual Production

This year's show, "13," explores middle school life.

When school lets out for the year in June, many kids and teens take to Waters Field for summer ball.

But next door in the , another group of aspiring thespians spend hours singing, dancing and acting on stage for an annual summer entertainment tradition.

The group, the Vienna Youth Players, brings together actors, singers, dancers, designers and tech masters from Vienna, Oakton and McLean each year for a summer production.

This year's production, "13," starts Friday night. The musical, based on a book by Dan Elish and Robert Horn, tells the story of a city teen who moves to a small town high school.

"[It] is about discovering that cool is where you find it and sometimes where you least expect it," producers say.

The group of more than 30 performers are aged 10 to 18, said co-producer Kathy Cutri. Many of them return when they're older to work on a tech crew, which tends to have another few dozen young adults aged 17 to 20.

Aside from getting to take the stage and getting important theater experience, the kids say what they like most is the bonds they form during late nights and long rehearsals.

The musical will run at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 5, 6, 12, 13 and 1 p.m. Aug. 14. Tickets are $12 for students and seniors and $14 for adults, and can be purchased at the Community Center.
