Vienna, Tysons Corner Rank Low On Commuter List

For those who commute daily from or around Vienna or Tysons Corner, a recent study by The Business Journals may not be much of a surprise.

The communities were thousands of places down the group's list of best commute times among other "small towns" in America, defined as areas with populations between 10,000 and 50,000 people.

The study analyzed resident responses collected by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2009. Areas were given points for workers with trips of less than 30 minutes one-way, and lost points for employees whose commutes took longer. 

The rankings "reflect both the ease of travel and the economic self-sufficiency within a given community," the Journals said. "The highest scores go to places that have wide ranges of easily reached workplaces."

No Fairfax County communities in the category earned a positive score.

Vienna was awarded a score of -9.921, making it the No. 2,406 worst area for commuting in the category. It ranked lower than Tysons Corner, which earned a score of -.5.973 and a ranking of 2,004. It also fell below Herndon, Idylwood, McLean and Falls Church.

By comparison, the No.1 city, Altus, Oklah., had a score of 22.411, according to the study: About 80.5 percent of its workers take less than 15 minutes to drive to their jobs. (Nationally, 28.7 percent of workers have a commute that length, according to the study).
