Virginia Lacrosse: Madison Girls, Boys Vie for Liberty District Title

Warhawks hope to sweep Friday double header at Langley.

Last year, the Madison High School girls lacrosse team avenged its sole season loss with an 18-17 thriller over Langley High School to win the Liberty District championship.

On Friday, the teams are set up for a repeat of last year's title game, as the Warhawks and Saxons face off at Langley High School in McLean.

And the Warhawks are hoping they'll come away with another win.

Like in 2012, both Madison and Langley (10-3) have had stellar 2013 seasons.

Madison (13-2) — the 2011 Virginia state champions — comes into Friday's game undefeated in the district, its only two losses coming from scrimmages earlier this season.

Over the past few years, the team, under head coach Amanda Counts, has become one of the area's best programs — largely because of a roster that is consistently deeper than its starting lineup.

Aside from four seniors —  Taylor Rivera-Silva, Erin Callahan, Melissa Kellan and Carly Frederick — the ream relies heavily on its juniors and sophomores, along with four freshman.

Madison Boys

After an early-season injury to a leading faceoff man and a losing streak that put the team at the bottom of the Liberty District, the Madison boys lacrosse team is feeling good heading into Friday's championship game against Langley — a team they haven't beaten all season.

Now at 11-5 (6-1), they're tied for the top seed in the district, along with Langley (11-5, 6-1).

“I would definitely say we kind of have a chip on our shoulder,” the injured player, Kyle Rowe, told the Washington Post. “In our time at Madison, we’ve never beaten Langley or Chantilly, so those losses really made us pretty mad. So we definitely would love to see those guys again and try to give them our best shot with a healthy team.”

The boys' game kicks off the double header at 6 p.m. at Langley High School in McLean. The girls play at 8 p.m. on the same field.
