Making a Comeback-Books that Move Us Benefit Luncheon

Best-selling author Julia Fox Garrison headlines benefit for Stroke Comeback Center

Nobody ever thought a stroke was entertaining – until Julia Fox Garrison turned herexperience into a hilarious and ultimately hopeful story that inspires audiences around the country. Garrison, best-selling author of Don't Leave Me this Way (Or When I Get Back on My Feet You'll Be Sorry), is one of three writers headlining “Making a Comeback: Books that Move Us,” a luncheon and book-signing Friday, May 30, to benefit the Stroke Comeback Center in Vienna, Va.  After a massive stroke at age 37, Julia’s steely determination, positive attitude and sense of humor – always humor, even through the tears – helped her recover way beyond her doctors’ expectations. This is an important, inspiring book -- and it’s really funny.
The event also celebrates the release of Out of the Darkness, a new book by local author Allison O’Reilly on  her victory over locked-in syndrome – a horrific post-stroke condition that left her fully conscious but unable to speak or move anything but her eyelids.

Also on the program:  Cindy Chambers, creator of TheBeamer Book Series, a collection  of children’s books about a little therapy dog who lives the life of a child in a place called Tell Me Town.  Through his experiences, Beamer learns about stroke, and many other challenging life events. The books are written with compassion and understanding.

Julia and Allison prove that a devastating stroke doesn’t have to mean a bleak
future.
With the right therapy and enough of it, a stroke survivor or wounded warrior can relearn to speak, read, write and understand - and regain a rich, fulfilling life.
That’s where the non-profit Stroke Comeback Center comes in. The Center is there for stroke survivors and wounded warriors after insurance for therapy ends – even though the patient is still regaining the ability to communicate.  The non-profit Stroke Comeback Center operates on a sliding fee scale; no one is turned away for inability to pay. It is a safe, comfortable and effective place for an injured person to reclaim a good life.
