More about the program:

The Winter Solstice is unique among the days of the year - the time of the longest night and shortest day. The dark triumphs, but only briefly, for the Solstice is also the turning point of the year. From the darkness, the light is reborn.

Words&Music celebrates this annual cycle, this restoration of light and salvation from the darkness, with their much-loved annual Star of the Morning program, featuring traditional music, poetry and prose from the Celtic, British and Early American canon.

Join us on our journey as we travel from the Amhairghin “Birth of Song” (an ancient Irish poem) through traditional Wassails of 17th century Britain and the traditional songs of Shakers and Mennonites of the American 18th century. We then celebrate the Christian Advent and Christmas tradition with much-loved arrangements of Folk and Shape Note melodies; some as familiar as “Wondrous Love” and “Carol of the Birds”, some are lesser-known gems such as “Fulfillment” and “Distress”.
