Farmers Market Contest, "Returning to Simpler Times," submit a no cook/no bake recipe in at the market, here, or on FacebookVienna-Farmers-Market--Winner get a $15 gift certificate to the market.

The last few weeks of power outages, record breaking 100 degree weather and natural disasters has me appreciating the simpler things in life. Of course it’s preferable to have electicity to prepare your meals by but all of us might have noticed during the loss of power that we survived on simpler foods. As a matter of fact, we at the market are announcing a contest in honor of everyone’s valor during the last few weeks. Submit your favorite no cook/no bake recipe for a meal either here, in person at the market (to one of our volunteers), via email (manager@viennafarmersmarket.com) or FacebookVienna-Farmers-Market. Winner receives a $15 gift certificate redeemable anywhere at the market.

At the Vienna Farmers Market the stalwart market goers have been rewarded with some of the most fantastic foods of the season. Last week at the market, I met a lovely woman who reminded of the simple and pure joy of eating a tomato sandwich (unadorned). She had a restricted diet and treats herself to tomato sandwiches this time of year. She and I both enjoyed smelling the perfume of the new tomatoes and I was reminded once again that the tomato is after all from the flower family.

How often do we take the time to have a simple supper of corn on the cob or watermelon salad (with fresh feta and arugula) or fried green tomatoes? These are all simple yet elegant seasonal dinners to prepare. I remember the joy of scooping out that first cantaloupe, musk melon of the season when I was growing up. It is really nice to appreciate the simple things in life by choice.

As we all hope for better weather please remember to support your local farmers/growers either at the Vienna Farmers Market or at other farmers markets or stores selling produce grown locally (it is so important to know where your food comes from and to sustain the local economy). See you at the Farmers Market…
