Best Bets for Families, September 16-18

Enjoy the first bit of Fall weather this weekend.

I don't know about you, but I'm in desperate need of a normal, disaster-free weekend. Even my toddlers have sensed the strangeness of the past few weeks. If your family wants to let off steam and play weekend, here are a few ideas:

Friday:

Spend time outdoors enjoying the early Fall weather, take a sunset wagon ride at Riverbend Park or Talk Turtles at Claude Moore Park.

If you don't mind a drive and want to check out Port Discovery in Baltimore, this is the night to do it. Tickets are only $2 after 4pm, normally they are $14 a person.

Saturday:

Fall Festival season kicks off in a big way this weekend. Here are just a few of them:

Cox Farms Fall Festival Preview Weekend: $15 per person for ages 2+, includes mazes, a pumpkin to take home, tunnels, giant slides, and playing with baby farm animals.

Mount Vernon's Colonial Market and Fair: $15 for adults, children 6-11 $7, under 6 free, includes admission to all of Mount Vernon. Colonial-attired artisans demonstrate 18th-century crafts and sell traditional wares. The event also features  entertainment including music, fire-eating, sword-swallowing, puppet and magic shows.

The Corn Maze at Cows-N-Corn opens today. Lots of things to do in addition to the maze-- check out the cows, learn to make butter and more. Stay late on Saturday for an old fashioned barn dance.

Ticonderoga's Fall Pumpkin Festival: $14.95 per person, includes hayrides, pumpkin, smore roasting, giant xylophone and more.

If you aren't ready for Fall, and want to rock out. Rocknoceros launches their new CD at Jammin Java. One party isn't enough, so they are having two, one at 11am and Family Happy Hour at 7pm.

Sunday:

There are several child-friendly events at the Fall for the Book Festival. Check out the schedule to find ones that appeal to your family.

Thomas is at the Strasburg Rail Station this week. Tickets are still available, but order them now, they almost always sell out.
