After-Christmas Shopping: What Deals Should Smart Spenders Look For?

'Tis the season smart shoppers wait for. What you should watch for this year as retail watchers predict big discounts.

The big day has arrived and the gifts have been opened, so it's time to start thinking about what's next: after-Christmas sales, of course.

Smart shoppers know to to wait for some items — those that didn't have to be under the tree on Christmas morning — to be marked down. According to The Huffington Post, "Savvy shoppers should realize that some items are actually a better deal after the holiday season."

And this is shaping up to be a good year for good deals. Editors at DealNews.com predict this could be a big year for post-holiday sales: "Considering the volume of consumer reports detailing how retailers did not sell as much as they would have liked during Black Friday, and how holiday spending overall is expected to be down, we anticipate stores will promote After Christmas sales with especially enticing price cuts."

And some of those after-Christmas sales have already started. Amazon.com has its Year-End Deals page filled with discounts of 40-70 percent on everything from clothing to jewelry to electronics.

Time magazine agreed that after-Christmas sales are starting earlier this year: "In the same way that retailers have messed with the timing of Black Friday sales — which certainly began on Thanksgiving Thursday, and were launched a week earlier by some stores — shoppers can expect to be presented with 'after Christmas' deals before Christmas."

As you head back to the malls or take to the internet, here are some of the products to look for at this time of year:

  • Televisions and other electronics: Watch for deals as the Super Bowl gets closer.
  • Winter clothing: Retailers are making room for the spring lines.
  • Furniture: Stores will be receiving new models soon.
  • Fitness Gear: Shoppers will be trying to keep those New Year's resolutions.
  • Christmas decorations: Stock up on supplies for next year.
