Brrrr! Better Bundle Up for Sunday's Vienna Turkey Trot

Tips for running in cold weather, forecast and schedule for Vienna Turkey Trot.

Brrrrr! The annual Vienna Turkey Trot will be a chilly one this year. According to the National Weather Service, the high on Sunday is expected to be 39 degrees. The good news? Rain, expected Friday night through Saturday night, should be all cleared out in time for the race, with a sunny day on tap.

The low on Sunday is 21 degrees, with 19-mile per hour winds expected.

How can you prepare to run in chilly weather?

  • Runner's World suggests wearing two tops, one bottom for 30-degree weather: A long-sleeve base layer and a vest to keep your core warm. Tights (or shorts, for polar bears), the magazine notes.
  • Active.com gives this tip for running in cold weather: "Take Extra Time To Warm Up: Your body will warm up more slowly in cold weather, especially if you run in the morning. Take at least five minutes to walk briskly before you start to run. It may take 10 to 15 minutes of running before you are completely warmed up and in your running tempo. Take a hot shower to pre-warm your muscles or put your clothes in the dryer on hot for a few minutes then head out for your run."
  • About.com's Running advises: "As much as 30 percent of your body heat escapes through your hands and feet. On mild days, wear running gloves that wick moisture away. Mittens are a better choice on colder days because your fingers will share their body heat. You can also tuck disposable heat packets into your mittens. Add a wicking sock liner under a warm polar fleece or wool sock, but make sure you have enough room in your running shoes to accommodate these thicker socks."
