FOOD FOR OTHERS: The Hungry Season

Hunger is no game, as we all know. At this time of year, food stocks at the Food for Others warehouse in Merrifield are at their yearly low. Our donations typically peak around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. After that, we try to distribute our supplies with a view to a reduced donation rate, especially over the summer. This past week we have seen demand shoot up at our warehouse. So, as we wait for those distant holidays, we need added donations now.

What’s more, school is back in session and demand for our Power Pack Program (P3) is way up. P3 provides weekend packs of food for children eligible for free and reduced price meals. Last year Fairfax County schools had 47,874 eligible students, more than one of four. While Food for Others cannot supply weekend Power Packs to all of them, we have increased our coverage from 14 to 26 schools. That is a lot of food every week.
