UPDATED: Maple Avenue Reopens Around Flipped Car Scene

Updated: Fairfax County Police spokesman Officer Bud Walker told Patch two people were rescued from a flipped car Tuesday on Maple Avenue after it apparently hit an emergency vehicle.

Both people were extricated from the car by Fairfax County crews, Walker said. They had non-life threatening injuries. 

It's not clear what kind of emergency vehicle the car struck, other than that it was a fire apparatus. It's not clear if that vehicle was from the Vienna Fire Station, another Fairfax County fire station, or Fairfax City's fire department, Walker said.

All four lanes on Maple Avenue are now reopened. In all, they were closed about 30 minutes, Walker said.

Original 3:17 p.m.: Flipped Car Closes Maple Avenue 

Traffic can't pass in either direction between Park and Center streets as crews work the scene.

A car that apparently collided with an emergency vehicle before flipping on its side in the heart of Maple Avenue has shut down the road in both directions Tuesday afternoon. Officials were gathering information about possible injuries.

The car was heading East toward Tysons Corner sometime between 2:30 and 2:45 p.m. when it apparently collided with some kind of emergency vehicle, Vienna Police Department spokesman Officer Gary Lose told Patch.

The road is shut down between Park and Center streets, Lose said. It's not immediately clear where exactly the crash occurred.

Fairfax County crews are working the scene because it involves a county vehicle.

The road would remain closed for about an hour, Lose said. 

At some point, one westbound lane was opened to let traffic through, but it's not clear if that is still the case.
