Metro Bus Fire Shuts Down I-66 W

Only left lane getting by near Nutley Street exit

Update 9:15 p.m.: A Metro spokesperson said early investigation indicated there were no passengers on the bus. The only person on the bus was the operator, the spokesperson said.

Original 8:51 p.m.: A Metro bus fire on Interstate 66 West near the Nutley Street exit has shut down all but one lane of traffic Thursday evening.

It's not clear which route the bus was traveling or how many passengers were on board.

No injuries have been reported so far.

As of 8:38 p.m., the fire had been extinguished, according to a Virginia State Police dispatcher. A wrecker is en route to the scene. The Virginia Department of Transportation live traffic reports estimate traffic is backed up about 2 miles.

At one point, the incident shut down all lanes of the interstate. Only the left lane was moving around the bus just after 8:30 p.m.; the dispatcher said all lanes should be open in about a half hour.

It is not clear what caused the fire.
