Police Log: DWI Arrest Leads to Larceny, Money Laundering Charges

The drunken driving arrest of a Chantilly man led to charges of money laundering, grand larceny and more, Vienna Police said. 

Son Xuan Tran, 27, of Elk Run Road in Chantilly was arrested for driving while intoxicated on the 100 block of Center Street South around 6 a.m. Oct. 7, police said. While at the Vienna Police Station for a breath analysis, police discovered Tran's license had been suspended.

Tran was transported the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was initially held on a $2,500 bond for driving while intoxicated and driving while suspended. 

While at the detention center, the arresting officer found Tran was wanted on several warrants from the Fairfax County Police Department. Tran was then issued warrants for selling a vehicle without a vehicle identification number, money laundering, larceny with intent to sell or distribute, two counts of grand larceny, and possession of a vehicle with an altered or removed serial number.

He is being held without bond.

Other highlights from the Vienna Police Department Log, Oct. 5 to 11:

• A citizen reported a large black dog was seen roaming around the 500 block of Highland Street NW around 2:35 p.m. Oct. 6. The dog, which did not possess a valid Town of Vienna Dog License or any owner information, was located and transported to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. The dog will be held until the owner can be identified. Animal Control Officer Barker will follow up on this case.
• An employee of Domino's Pizza, 331 Maple Ave. East, reported he had been receiving harassing telephone calls from an ex-girlfriend around 10:46 p.m. Oct. 6. This case is being investigated.
• During a traffic stop on Courthouse Circle at Courthouse Road SW around 3:05 a.m. Oct. 7, an officer detected suspected marijuana on the driver's seat. A field test confirmed it was marijuana. Douglas Paul Tarasek, 25, of Orchard Street in Vienna was issued a summons for possession of marijuana. After signing the summons, Tarasek was released.
• An employee of Giant Food Store, 359 Maple Ave. SE, reported a male individual had absconded with a grocery bag containing an undetermined amount of groceries around 11:04 a.m. Oct. 8. The employee stated he did not wish to pursue charges.
• An employee of Wolftrap Hotel, 430 Maple Ave. SW, reported a hotel guest had left without paying his bill around 12:40 p.m. Oct. 8. The room was being paid for by another individual, who authorized payment for two weeks only. The guest had stayed at the hotel for three weeks. The hotel had not informed the individual paying for the room the guest had stayed past the agreed upon two weeks. The hotel employee was advised it was a civil matter and not a criminal matter.
• A resident reported she found a note on her door on the 400 block of Tapawingo Road SW from her estranged nephew around 6:37 p.m. Oct. 8. The note requested they mend their differences. The resident stated she was not ready to reconcile and did not wish for the nephew to make any further attempts to contact her. The nephew was contacted with the aunt's request. He agreed to not attempt any further contact.
• A resident walked into police headquarters, 215 Center St. South, around 10:35 a.m. Oct. 9 to request the destruction of un-needed ammunition.
• During a traffic stop on the 100 block of Church Street SW, an officer detected the odor of marijuana and found measurable amounts of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Tyler Roy Koontz, 19, of Marquette Street in Vienna, was issued a summons for possession of marijuana. Koontz was released after signing the summons.
• During a traffic stop on the 400 block of Maple Avenue SE around 2:24 a.m. Oct. 11, the driver showed signs of possible impairment. After failing to complete field sobriety tests, Melanie Sherling Petty, 26, of Country Ridge Lane in Fairfax was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Petty was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center for a breath analysis. After the analysis a warrant for driving while intoxicated was issued. Petty was held on a $1,000 bond.
• A resident reported her husband might have been having a medical emergency on the 300 block of Old Courthouse Road NE around 12:43 p.m. Oct. 11. After calming her husband down, the wife advised she would be able to get the services he needed.
• A resident on the 1200 block of Drake Street NW reported a neighbor's dogs had been barking and that it was an ongoing problem. An officer spoke with the owner of the dogs, who agreed to take the dogs inside to avoid any further complaints. Animal Control Officer Barker will follow up on this case.
