Police Log: Early Morning Foot Chase Ends In Arrests For DUI, Assaulting An Officer

The following arrest information was supplied by the Vienna Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A Chantilly man was arrested Sept. 7 after he led officers on a foot chase through the edge of Vienna and into Fairfax County territory, assaulting an officer and resisting arrest before Vienna Police helped take him into custody.

The incident began when Vienna Police stopped a truck at 3:40 a.m. Sept. 7 at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Nutley Street. An officer noticed the drive might be impaired, and during the stop, the vehicle rolled back towards the officer's cruiser on several occasions. He had the driver turn off the truck and step out of it.

After getting out of the truck, the driver fled on foot, running towards James Madison Drive and jumping a fence. After investigating, officers found the truck was registered to a Glengyle Drive address and the driver had  a suspended license. Fairfax County Police responded to assist in the investigation since Glengyle Drive is just outside the Town limits.

Glengyle Drive on foot. Police made contact with Whalen, who then allegedly began assaulting the Fairfax County officer. Whalen was eventually taken into custody with the assistance of Vienna Officers Juelharte, Lewis and Seitz.

Whalen was taken to Vienna Police Headquarters for breath analysis, where he refused a breath sample. He was then taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where he was formally charged with driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest, refusal to submit to a breath test and driving on a suspended operator’s license. He was held without bond. The assisting Fairfax County officer also charged Whalen with assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.
